Continuing level 2 classes are for students who are well-established in a yoga practice, know the fundamental postures, know how to make modifications for their level with and without props, and can self-correct in the postures. As students'' skills and understanding of yoga deepens, the asanas will as well. This class will focus particularly on sun salutations, their purpose and the union of each movement with the breath. Students at this level should be able to hold Caturanga Dandasana (plank). More complicated backbends, twists and arm balances are taught at this level. Yoga Sutra readings, pranayama and meditation are also incorporated at this level. All classes end with deep relaxation.
These classes are challenging and rewarding! This class focuses on fundamental standing poses, seated poses, easy inversions, and relaxation poses. Teachers will give instructions on how to modify postures for your practice. The postures learned at this level are a necessary foundation for all of our other classes. All yoga classes end in deep relaxation. Students who have never done yoga or who have little yoga experience will feel at home in this class. Level 1 Hatha Yoga is the perfect choice for students new to Yoga East yoga, out of practice, or students looking to build a stronger foundation in their practice.
Level 1-2 Mixed Level classes are geared to students in normal health who are still working to learn fundamental postures as well as those who have more experience and are seeking to expand, refine and develop their yoga practice at more subtle levels. Sun Salutations and series of flowing poses are incorporated at this level. All classes end with deep relaxation.
Gentle Level is ideal for seniors, pregnant women, and students recovering from illness, injury or surgery. Gentle classes are also great for anyone who needs a little rest and quiet from the busy pace of life. Gentle Yoga has a slower pace and the teachers give more instruction on how to use props such as chairs, the wall, blocks, blankets, bolsters for support. Gentle Yoga introduces fundamental Hatha Yoga postures while ensuring that students have time to understand the instructions, and get the props needed to practice the pose to their capacity. This class may include accupressure yoga, chakra yoga visualizations, pranayama and mudras. Class ends in deep relaxation. Although this class is suited to students needing assistance, students with pronounced physical limitations are requested to phone us first about their restrictions before coming to class. This is more than just a prenatal yoga class. It is a community of expectant moms sharing their journey to motherhood. We have fun! We laugh and support each other during class. In addition to yoga postures, we also practice relaxation and breathing techniques that will decrease stress and increase overall comfort while creating more space for your growing baby. Practicing prenatal yoga can alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy and help your body prepare for the WORK of birthing. Creating balance and connecting mind and body as your pregnant body is constantly changing is a challenge. Yoga is an amazing tool to help in this journey.
Gentle level hatha yoga class uses chairs, the wall and other props for safety and support. Recommended for students who need help with balance or who have trouble going down to the floor. This class is included with Yoga East memberships.
This Hatha yoga class follows the Sivananda sequence which includes beginning warm-ups, pranayama, inversions, forward bends, backbends, twists, and deep relaxation at the end. This class is appropriate for all levels of students and includes adaptations for challenging poses. Class ends with deep relaxation.

Learn human anatomy as it pertains to the practice of yoga and pranayama. Learn why postures are difficult, how stretching works, why yoga builds strength, and how some yoga postures can be dangerous and even deadly if done incorrectly. Understanding the anatomy of a posture can make it easier and better. Each class works with particular groups of postures like forward bends, backbends, twists and inversions. Each class covers anatomy and physiology; injuries and physical limitations commonly encountered in the posture and ways of working with those challenges; the anatomy of the subtle body including the chakra system, nadis (channels of the subtle body) and koshas (subtle sheaths). Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were composed approximately 2400 years ago and brilliantly and succinctly summarize the yoga system in a text of 196 aphorisms (sutras). Patanjali's work has been the subject of numerous scholarly commentaries. Although it fell into obscurity for several centuries it was resurrected by Western Sanskrit scholars in the 19th century. Today it is widely studied as one of the earliest and most authoritative texts of yoga. Study of the Yoga Sutras is recommended in both the Ashtanga and Iyengar systems. This class will chant, read and discuss the meaning of the Sutras and how they are relevant and helpful for one's own yoga practice. No previous knowledge of the Yoga Sutras is needed for the class. The origins of yoga have been shrouded in myth and mystery, but current yoga scholars are penetrating the veil and researching yoga's history. Hear the amazing stories of the siddhas (perfected ones), the rishis, the wizards, the magicians, the wild goddesses, the yogins and yoginis who were so powerful they were seen as divine beings. Learn to separate myth from history and analyze yoga critically and intelligently. Great yoga practitioners and teachers need to be well-informed on the history of yoga. Introduction to the philosophy of yoga includes study and discussion of the modern history of yoga. How did yoga originate?
